As we all know the game is quite different nowadays to when it was back 2014 and 2015, which I wasn't playing at the time but I have sufficient knowledge about through videos and such on Youtube, so how you should be spending 'gems' is also quite different.
Most of the mid-level to advanced players know the general gist of gem spending so this guide is targeted at beginner to some mid-level players.
Personally I can't stop you from spending gems on what you desire but if you would like your gems to be used wisely than this guide will advise you.
I will describe the 2 best ways you you can spend your gems and hope it advises your decisions in gem spending.
1. In my opinion the best way you can spend your gems is through the Alchemy and the Alice Bond system. This is because these methods, whilst they do require patience and the willpower to save gems will result in your gems being worth spent as they guarantee more gems when you put gems in either of them. The alchemy straight up gives you more gems than you spent whilst the Alice Bond, I think is the event to wait for as it pays you back gems 'monthly' I believe in a rebate system that gives you a total rebate that is more than what you spent with your gems as well as giving you 4/5 star creatures for the first two bonds and the special 5 star rare creature for the 3rd bond upwards. The different stages of the Alchemy are 50, 500, 1500, 5k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 500k gems.
2. I have also been advised that the Heist, if it ever comes round again is a very good way to spend gems, just make sure you have 1000-1500 gems to refresh tries so you can get enough shards to get that 5* creature you want. The heist is pretty much 'the event' to wait for after Alice Bond. A thing to note with the heist is that you should only do it when the rewards are pretty good or there is a particular 5 star creature that you need for a particular deck. (Apparently heist rewards have been getting worse - from 1st to 2nd heist at least, from what I've read.)
3. The third best and final ways you can use gems wisely are through Human Booster Packs that come as events from time to time and the first chest in the second gem mine (for Star Players mostly). Booster packs are like altar draws except you are guaranteed a 4 star creature which is pretty good as you have a chance to nab some 5 stars. I would highly suggest to wait for human boosters as they have the possibility of giving you a Great Mystic which is by far one of the best 5 star cards in the game as it has the revive skill, which is a huge game changer. Each booster costs 675 gems. Onto the silver gem mine, this method should be of main concern only to the Star players, such as myself, as it will allow you to get a 5 star hero in around 2 and a 1/2 to 3 months, I think, and also Mythril Drone and Sea Wizard if you choose to go for a 5 star creature instead and a potential to get a 5 star creature from the chests but don't count on this to happen. Remember to keep in mind that you have to just go to the first chest in the silver mine as the rest of the chests and gold mine are not worth it. To the F2P player, I would not recommend you put your gems in the mines as you won't have enough gems to consistently get to the first chest thus making it usually not worth the investment. Personally I'm going to do the first chest in the silver mine until sky arena, for a chance to get Laurel, and then after then I will rethink silver mine first chest because I was thinking that maybe opening the silver mine's chest once every 3-4 days would be better of for me and maybe even other star members as it means your star will be able to net you some gems to help you reach reach alchemy 20,000 and higher bonds in Alice Bond. One more thing to note is that with double ore event the first chest of the silver mine is 1:6 ore ratio making it very worthwhile and getting to the first gold chest is quite worthwhile with a 1:3.34 (sth like that).
4. I'm unsure about this event as I haven't had much experience with it but I believe spending 100-200 gems on the Relic Chests can be somewhat worthwhile as it can get you some nice 4 and 5 star omni shards and the possibility of a 4 and if you are lucky a 5 star creature. I believe that this event is quite good but only if you have unlocked a huge number of mazes from 7 and up, e.g maze 7, 8, 9, 10 etc as you will be able to use controlled dice to land on gold chests that can get you around 100 relic points continuously, which may be able to net you some sweet rewards. I have gotten a Bewitcher on my 8th chest the first time the event came round as I had a stack of controlled dice at the time so the whole 'open more chests for better rewards' I think is true. I also remember getting a full Light Brave from a chest at one time which was pretty nice so the rewards can be quite good.
The above places to spend your gems are what I think are the best ways to spend your gems. The main difference between this guide and others made in 2015 is that Ultima Chests are not as worthwhile as before with gems being all that more valuable as you get less from your daily log-in's and I think a drop in the drop rates of 5 star creatures. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure about that. However I very rarely but still sometimes do open some of the Ultima Chests when there is an event as you can get some extra 5 star creature shards that are ok and I have already opened 5 when I had not yet stumbled upon this forum. I however DO NOT RECOMMEND opening Ultima chests. Ultima chests btw are chests that you can get by upgrading a gold chest to an Ultima one that you can only do in maze 7 upwards and it guarantees you a 4-5 star creature. Buying 60 energy is rarely but sometimes decent when there is an event that is very worthwhile and where energy needs to be used in excess.
P.S Unless you want to squander your gems please don't do the lucky spin and remember Deck Heroes is a very heavy grind unless you are a P2P player.
Post down below any other ways that you spend your gems and if I've missed anything.
Oh also don't worry if you have wasted gems, I've wasted 1.1k on lucky spin and 1.35k on two 5x altar gem draws, which aren't worth it btw. 4k blown on Ultima where I got all 4 stars was pretty bad as well. I've learnt from my experiences and this guide is to help you not make the same mistakes I did when I started playing this game.
If you've read all this then you are amazing and to all who see this have a great day and may RNGesus give you many 5 star creatures in Deck Heroes.
