With "Tier 1" materials you can get a random orange material with 3 purple materials using the trick below:
Initial Phase
Orange Material
A. 1 white + 1 white = lvl1 white equipment
B. 1 purple + 1 white + lvl1 white equipment = lvl1 purple equipment
C. 2 purple + lvl1 purple equipment = lvl1 gold equipment
D. Dismantle the lvl1 gold = 1 gold material
Using Boots for example, Lv1 Boots require Gnarl and Steel and with this process you using 3 purple materials (2 gnarl and 1 steel, or vice versa) you can get an orange version of one of those (I'm assuming it's a choice between one of the materials used to craft that piece?). Basically you save on one purple material by using this method instead of combining 4 of the same materials, though you have less control on what the orange material is. I'm in the process of upgrading my Orange Lv3 equipment to Lv5 now and I was wondering if there were any similar tricks for getting orange "Tier 2" materials like Feathers and Extract (for Boots) or am I stuck with combining 4 purple copies?

You have to grind out the other 2 materials. No tricks to it.

You get a random orange material of the 4 needed for that type. I can confirm this. I have dismantled level 1 orange's before and gotten feathers and extract. The odds may be higher to get gnarl or steel but I have gotten the other two.

Ditto thanks, I was hoping this would be the case but I've only used this trick twice and gotten a Tier 1 mat each time (not a great sample size).

Yeah chances are probably higher for Tier 1 knowing IGG. But just keep trying eventually youll get it. Granted if you are really unlucky eventually youll have to weigh the time wasted on this method versus smelting for it...or spending gems on flips. 50 gems a day will get you 4 attempts at getting some good materials.

If that actually works, then once you have an orange to work with, it only takes one white of the other to recreate the orange equipment to diantle over and over until you get the desired result.
I've never personally gotten any material out of dismantle that didn't originally go I to it, but if it works, then it may be worth doing it over and over to make it work.
On another note, since it only takes 8 purples to create an orange level 3, AND most of the purples can be tier1's, then just make orange lv3 and dismantle that for two oranges that have equal chance if being tier 1 OR 2

It may have been that early on you could, but possibly over time IGG has changed that. I say that because it also used to be if you had several copies of an orange mat, you could make an orange Level 1 item with that mat and a white one, and when you dismantled it, you would often get back a different orange mat. Lately, I've tried that several times when I had multiple copies of a Tier 1 orange mat and just needed one of the other one, but when I dismantle the item, it keeps on giving me back the same mat back again. As tanisomsford said, maybe if you keep doing it again and again, eventually you will get the desired material. For me though, that just seems like a total waste of time and effort since there's no way to know if you'll ever get it. Instead, use your time to smelt the items which guarantee you'll end up with the material you want.

I have a ton of fur and I'm slowly making it into other materials. Have to farm lvl 1 sawtooths but that's a small price for a diverse lvl 4 stash.
