I have been studying crafting for the last few weeks. There are many great posts, but I have not found any single post that was concise and practical.
If you find this post useful, please bump it so we stay high in the forum.
Notation I use:
w = white material
g = green material
b = blue material
p = purple material
g = gold material
2p = 2 purple material
L1we = Level 1 white equipment
L3ge = Level 3 gold equipment
Family 1 = Gnarl Steel Feather Extract = Boots Cap
Family 2 = Jawbone Talon Leaf Grass = Sword Tunic
Family 3 = Sawtooth Fur Crystal Stardust = Belt Gloves
Primary Materials = Gnarl Steel Jawbone Talon Sawtooth Fur
These are the materials used to make Level 1 equipment
=======================================================
Suggestion:
The order you should make equipment:
Boots, Sword, Cap, Tunic, Belt, Gloves
First make Level 3 gold equipment for all slots.
Then, use the L3ge to try to make L5ge for all slots.
There are multiple posts about the optimal way to make materials. While very helpful, the truth is that you probably have an assortment of various materials already in your stash. To quickest way to make equipment, is to learn how to SWITCH materials from one kind into another kind. That way, you can convert materials from any Family into the Family you need.
Do Lucky Flip every day. Personally I do 3 flips (free, 5 gems, 10 gems) every day. Sometimes, if I have the gems and there is a 3x tile and a gold material tile, I might go all the way with the hopes of getting 3x followed by gold material.
Of course you should always be smelting.
The methods I provide below are very close to optimal.
=======================================================
Crafting Level 1 gold equipment (L1ge)
There are 2 optimal methods to get a Gold Material.
Version 1: This will cost you 3 purple Materials
Version 2: This costs you 2 purple 50% of the time and 4 purple 50% of the time, hence on average the two methods cost the same, but in version 2, you can get lucky or unlucky.
Version 1:
2w ==> L1we (use 2 white materials to make a Level 1 white equipment)
L1we + w + p ==> L1pe
L1pe + 2p ==> L1ge
Total Cost = 3 white + 3 purple
Version 2:
2p => Level 1 equipment. 49% chance for gold, 51% chance for purple
If you get purple equipment, then you need to upgrade it to gold using: L1pe + 2p ==> L1ge
Total cost = 2 purple 49% of the time and 4 purple 51% of the time
=======================================================
Crafting Level 3 gold equipment (L3ge)
L1ge + p + 2w ==> L2ge
L2ge + g + 3w ==> L3ge
Total Cost = 8 white + 4 purple + 1 gold
=======================================================
Crafting Level 5 gold equipment (L5ge)
L3ge + 4g ==> Level 5 equipment (42% of the time, you get gold, 58% you get purple)
* if you get purple, the only thing you can do is dismantle your L5pe into 2 purple materials. Yes this sucks.
* Using L4ge does not improve your odds (this is what I have been told)
* I wear my L5pe until I finished upgrading everything to L5, then I go back and try to upgrade all my purples to gold
=======================================================
Converting Primary Purple Material into another Primary Purple Material.
This uses the fact that L1pe Dismantles into a purple material
2w => L1we
L1we + 1p + 1w => L1pe
L1pe + 2w => L1pe (the trick is that you can use any L1pe.)
Dismantle L1pe ==> p
Example: Convert Purple Steel into Fur. Note that Steel is Family 1, and that Fur is Family 3
Step 1: Purple Steel + White Gnarl ==> Level 1 Gold Boots
Step 2: Purple Boots + White Sawtooth + White Fur ==> Level 1 Purple Gloves
Step 3: Dismantle Purple Gloves ==> Get either Purple Sawtooth, or Purple Fur.
Step 4: If you got Purple Sawtooth, then Purple Sawtooth + White Fur ==> Purple Gloves. Goto Step 3
=======================================================
Converting Primary Gold Material into another Primary Gold Material.
This uses the fact that L1ge Dismantles into a gold material
Primary Materials = Gnarl Steel Jawbone Talon Sawtooth Fur, these are the materials used to make L1e.
g + w ==> L1ge
L1ge + 2w ==> L1ge (the trick is that you can use any L1ge.)
Dismantle L1ge ==> g
Example: Convert Gold Steel into Fur. Note that Steel is Family 1, and that Fur is Family 3
Step 1: Gold Steel + White Gnarl ==> Level 1 Gold Boots
Step 2: Gold Boots + White Sawtooth + White Fur ==> Level 1 Gold Gloves
Step 3: Dismantle Gold Gloves ==> Get either Gold Sawtooth, or Gold Fur.
Step 4: If you got Gold Sawtooth, then Gold Sawtooth + White Fur ==> Gold Gloves. Goto Step 3
=======================================================
Converting 4 Purple + 1 Gold into 2 Gold.
The Family of the 2 gold you get is the same Family as the 1 gold you start with.
This works for any gold material, not just the primary materials
This uses the fact that L3ge Dismantles into 2 gold material
Step 1: use 3 purple to make L1ge (see above)
Step 2: L1ge + p + 2w ==> L2ge (any L2ge works)
Step 3: L2ge + g + 3w ==> L3ge (the trick is that you can use any L2ge. Of course the g must be from the correct Family)
Example:
I want to try for my L5 boots, so I need the following 4 in gold: Gnarl, Steel, Feather, Extract
I have 2 gold Extract and want to convert one of them into one of the other materials.
Note that Extract is not a primary material.
Use the gold Extract and L2ge to make L3g Boots, then dismantle. Hopefully you will get materials you need.
IMPORTANT VARIATION:
This will also work for converting 2 gold + 1 purple into 2 gold where you start with 1 gold from the destination family and any other gold.
Lets say I already have my L5 gold Belt and L5 gold Gloves. I no longer need Sawtooth, Fur, Crystal, or Stardust. You can convert the Sawtooth and Fur into Family 1 materials as described above, but what do you do with your gold Crystal or Stardust? You can not use them to make L1e, but you can use the Crystal to make L2ge if you add a purple (or gamble), and you can use the Stardust to make L3ge. Its worth a try as these materials are useless to you.
=======================================================
End of Note.
