Obviously some of these are situational and some have good synergy with specific cards so just pick one overall.

They all affect physical damage and all work at the beginning of fights, so that helped me make a decision.
1. Ice Shell 2. Cripple 3. Agile 4. Full Alert
Ice Shell can't be resisted by Immunity like Cripple can, so it just squeaks past for top choice IMHO. Agile can avoid all damage, but can also fail and then you take damage. Last is Full Alert, Block is nice, but Battleblow/faction buff/Sacrifice just go through it anyway.

Full alert does have the advantage of affecting every creature on your board though Yeah, so does Zero Kelvin and Lightfoot. The equivalent for Full Alert is Phalanx. No, Phalanx is the weaker (3 creature) version of full alert. Full alert is available on 4* heroes. (Sharp Armour is still 5* only). EDIT: just like weaken is 3 enemy creatures, but cripple (4*) is every-enemy-creature. The weaker faction skill upgrades at 4*, the stronger at 5* I guess.

All i mean is, if we're comparing defensive skills, it makes sense to compare full alert against ice shell because they're available on 4* heroes. You could compare full alert against zero kelvin but given the difference in availability it makes little sense. You should be comparing sharp armour (the neander 5*-only defensive) against it.

Well to be perfectly honest, Spiky Bits/Sharp Armor are so powerful that they border overpowered.
In Explorer's Gate, they need to be that powerful, against other players they are way past the point of being cheesy.

I'm going cripple > ice shell as my preferred skill. Only for its ability to help with guild maps way past the 3 turns of usage. But ice shell is a close 2nd for reasons mentioned above.
All the skills are handy though and all have good uses.

You have to consider their trigger too. Ice shell/spiky bits triggers with 2 faction creatures active, which is vital for early momentum and easy to control. Sharp armor/zero kelvin triggers with 3 faction creatures dead- which is not only harder to control, but means you have a max of 7 creatures alive anyway.
I would definitely say spiky bits>sharp armor, and you could make a good argument for ice shell>kelvin.
As far as abilities go, I like cripple/shell/full alert/agile. Agile is too hit and miss for me, and with the hp buff neander get coupled with bits, full alert does enough to keep damage down. Cripple is my favourite due to the fact it can permanently wreck a buffing deck and give your whole team a free start to set up. Immunity can be an issue, but it shuts down so many threats before they start- its a big reason why wight is so hard to play against with any deck.

Agile gets my vote just because in tournament i`ve seen agile beat ice shell countless times when decks have similar strenght, the other way arround happens less often.

Full Alert for me, but it depends on your deck.

Cripple: Works like Fragiure (however named). Strong in guild maps, weak against immunity creatures.
Agile: Works like Dodge. Best skill against rip, venom edge and whatever.
Full Alert: Works like Block. But you will get the most damage (longer-range, when you compare it with cripple) I would say, that Spikey Bits is more a defensive skill than full alert.
Ice Shell: Works like Frost Amor (FA). Best skill to get the lowest damage as possible. Best about this skill: It is as Level 1 also awesome.
I have voted for Agile.

Out of the options given, only one is a viable skill at Lv.1 and that's Ice Shell.

Went to the wiki out of curiousity to calculate the expected value of each in certain situations. Numbers weren't listed but I did get a good chuckle. Apparently Zero Kelvin is available on 4-5*, Lightfoot and Full Alert don't exist, and there is a whole section on choosing talents that just says "The best talent is Spikey Bits."
