For a few months now, the only thing keeping me from being a top player (as in Top 16) had been my lack of levels. As of a few weeks ago, I began putting a lot of work into leveling and now I'm always in contention for Top 12 on any given day in Tournament. As such, I feel like I've now gotten a good grasp of how to maximize my EXP output. Behold!
Trials
Do trials, every day, for as far as you can. Skipping from trials 1 to 100 gives you a total of 248468. That's huge. And you are guaranteed that once you've reached the final milestone (which is clear Trial 120, I believe). Every single day, you get 248468 exp for hitting 2 buttons. This is the best and cheapest source of exp available to everyone, as it's free (well, you need good decks to clear the later levels, but you get 3 free attempts a day).
Gauntlet
While you get a paltry amount of EXP from this, you get a lot of other useful things, such as shards (some of them for 5-star heroes!), Tokens, glory and even a chance to draw entire creatures from chests, even useful 5-star ones! You only get a total of 3600 EXP for clearing all 15 stages, but there's no reason not to clear them if you can because of the additional rewards. The 3600 EXP is essentially free.
Exploration
Exploring maps for shards rakes in, besides potential shards, guaranteed amounts of gold and EXP. While the amount is slightly randomized, there's a set range for each map. The later the map, the higher that range is. For example, exploring 15-11 can bring in 2800+ EXP per exploration attempt while exploring 15-1 brings in a maximum of around ~2390. At 4 energy a pop, Exploration can bring in a lot of EXP. Just remember, this is only really worth it if you've cleared the later maps. Maps 1-10 aren't really worth it, topping out at around ~1600, though this might be worth it if you're a low level players, languishing in the lower double digits.
Mazes
Mazes are an excellent source of EXP, 2nd only to Trials, but 2nd to none when it comes to potential EXP. The higher numbered the map, the more EXP a maze can dish out, obviously. The mathematical formula seems to be Map Number x 1000 + ~3000. Clearing Maze 15 gives out slightly more than 18000 EXP, clearing map 14 gives out slightly more than 17000 EXP and so on. Not only that, there are those pesky little Question Marks inside of the maps. They can contain anything from shitty creatures (1-2 star, ugh), Move 3 Steps Backwards/Forward, a dismal amount of EXP and a lot of gold or, drum roll, a crapton of EXP. The rule of thumb here seems to be Whatever You Get Clearing the Maze - ~500. It takes me roughly 75 energy to clear each map and I average 50000-60000 EXP per completion of Maze 15. Also, if you land on an empty space, you get more EXP than exploring the highest numbered map on the same map would give (~3100 for Maze 15) and even landing on a Battle Space will net you a bit of EXP (~1200 for Maze 15). The only way to not get EXP out of a Maze is to land on a a chest or a Question Mark and get either a Controlled Dice or a shitty 1-2 star creature. As a completely F2P player, you get 1 free Maze reset per maze each day. As a star player, you get 2 refreshes and if you wanna go pay a few gems, you can refresh mazes 5 times a day using gems (this is in total, not 5 times per maze). Obviously, you should use this only for the highest numbered maze you have. At 40 gems a refresh, it's a steal, in my opinion. This is, by far, the best source of EXP, in my opinion. Sure, Trials is faster and "free" (well, 3 attempts a day + any skips free), but if you need a lot of EXP in a jiffy, Mazes can provide that. Instead of leveling once every other week, I now level once every 2-4 days (the gap becomes bigger as I go along as the amount of EXP needed between levels rises) and I'm only doing Mazes 13 and 14 twice and Maze 15 7 times daily ("only"). Note: The higher the number of the maze, the higher the prevalence of the Crapton of EXP to be rolled on Question Marks. I spent 1 day using Controlled Dice to land on every single Question Mark on Mazes 15 (7 times) and Mazes 14 and 13 (twice each) and have also kept a score in my head ever since. The chances of getting the Crapton of EXP seems to be double as high in Maze 15 as in Maze 14 or 13.
Daily Tasks
Free EXP, gold and Coupon Shards for doing things that can be entirely F2P. Enhance your creatures? Explore a few maps, use any of the crappy creatures you're bound to find as material to enhance another creatures. Net the profits.
My Daily Routine Nowadays:
* Finish all Daily Tasks besides Fight in Chamber (unless I've got energy left over and nothing to do with it) or Finish a Mine.
* Clear Trials
* Clear Gauntlet
* Clear Maze 15 7 times and Maze 14 and 13 twice
* After that, I might also explore every map on map 15. It brings in more EXP than clearing Maze 12.
