Maybe you know that. But anyway. You can craft lvl_1 gold equipment with 2 purple material. The chance is ~ 50%. If you are lucky you change this gold item for 1 random gold material. If you got purple item you change it for 1 random purple material. It is more cheap way to collect gold materials than general grind.

Whoa. Did not know.
As the imbalance in what you get is pretty great, ie I have very few potions but way too many talons, you can exploit this to craft equipment which requires you have an over-abundance of, and have a *chance* at getting materials you lack. Works for blue as well.

So, you take two purple materials and craft a level 1 equipment.
Then, dismantle the equipment for a (random?) material of the same quality.
Do you lose one of the materials or do you get both both upon dismantling?

You lose both materials when you craft the equipment, and the chance at orange is only 50% when using 2 purples. So for instance, you use a purple jawbone and a purple talon to craft a lvl 1 sword, and you get lucky and get an orange sword. You can then dismantle the orange sword for a random orange material. You only used 2 purple materials to get this 2 orange material, instead of 4.
Worst case scenario, you get 1 purple material back, if you craft a purple equipment and dismantle it.

Dismantle this orange weapon and you have a chance to get a different material. Sort of like trading material u have a lot of into material you need.

In playing a little deeper into this, purple plus white, plus a white item, crafts a purple item 98%, orange 2%.
This purple item, plus two purple material, creates orange lv1 items at 98%. A near guarantee.
Its much less risky than 49% orange with only 2 purples, or 60% orange with 2 purples and a blue item.
Also the blue theory doesnt work, two blues are 50/50 green/blue. You need a a green item or better to get purple so its not really a "bargain"
Edit: if you are confused by this, then don't bother with it. The math embedded in the equipment system is difficult to get used to, and it takes a lot of little materials used in different ways to manipulate out better stuff. But it is there.
In lv 1 and 3 items crafting, you can shave off one purple in your quest for getting all the oranges to make your legendary gear. But its not simple to wrap your head around

Crafting a lv 1 purple item from a purple + white material + white equipment could be useful if you needed to get rid of one constituent part of an equipment and transform it to another, but it doesn't give you the chance* at a conversion of 2 purples into an orange instead of 4.
when you break an equipment down, i think it only can go back to the parts that are used to form it. I've only done about 20 tests, but this has not variated would advise asking someone who knows more

Haha, I got a lv3 Orange boots with your trick. - 2 Purple mats => Lv1 Orange (48% success) - 2 White mats + Equipment => Lv2 Orange (78%) - 2 Purple + 2 Blue + Equipment => Lv3 Orange (73%)
Total cost is only 1 Orange, 2 Blue, 2 White while normally it needs 2 Orange, 2 Purple
EDIT: I was lucky. Total success rate was only 27%

Think the most optimal way to create a gold is the following:
Use 2x16 white material to create 16 lvl 1 white equipment ... Upgrade this 16 equipment to one purple lvl 1 equipment
Then use 2 puple material and the purple equipment to make a gold lvl 1 equipment (98+% chance)
This way you only pay 2.5 purple material (32 white is equal to 0.5 purple) for a gold material

Yeah a bit :-)
The way you are doing it the cost is 3 purple
First time (fail) the actual cost is 1 purple and the 2nd time the cost is 2 purple (success) ... 3 in total

Actually thinking of it, you can create a gold material for 2 purple with 100% ..... Make the 4 purple equipment lvl1 as stated above, convert to a gold equipment.
That would cost you 4x2x16 = 128 white material, equal to 2 purple, for a gold.
Upgrading material (for gold) instead the cost is: 4x4x4x4 = 256 white material

The method that sblip suggested grants an orange gear for 3 purples with a very high level of certainty.
