Missing: Cinder Spirit, Guardian Dragon, 1-3 star heroes
Requesting community analysis: Warlock, Rhonin, Cinder Spirit, Guardian Dragon
The 5-star system is very outdated regarding hero strength... as IGG released more and more heroes the star system lost meaning past level 4. Some heroes are not even close to the same league compared to others at the same star value. This is my attempt at starting a community effort to create an index of "TRUE" hero strength on a 1-10 scale. Expanding the scale allows us to be a lot more accurate and to take into account far more subtleties.
On a scale of 1-10, re-ranking of heroes was done in terms of OVERALL usefulness, but more weight is given towards PvP strength at higher stars and higher levels. There will definitely be differing viewpoints about how heroes stack against each other, but the goal is a community consensus, so let me know what you think! In each category, heroes are in no particular order.
***1 star***
Defiler : Grimoire Vitality 5
***2 star***
Zora Marauder : Grimoire Violence 5, Guild Map
Hard to collect. His damage boost is on a 3-round timer, but at higher levels this boost can be significant, especially coupled with healing runes. If you can get it to proc every other round at least, you have a very good deck for clearing Guild Maps.
Deathmort : PvP
The worst of the 4 star heroes, poor Deathmort gets demoted to 2 stars even on a 10 star scale. He is outshined by the others in almost every way, but his Acrimony has the potential to hit hard, if it stays alive. But who puts healing in a Mortii deck?
Chaos Witch : Guild Battle, Gauntlet, Glory Raids, World Map
Useful for voodoo decks and going face, and low cost raiding decks. She also comes with the Mortii undying ability. A popular old (and still used) strategy is to fill your deck with Dark Witches (often melded with Discord) and other Voodoo creatures for a cheap face deck in the Guild Wars. This can also work at lower Map levels.
***2.5 star***
Devil Hunter : PvP, World Map
Cool hero concept, but purely defensive, and no summoned creatures, so is not useful in guild maps because of hero damage and tenacity. If we were solely ranking him on PvP he'd be higher. He is more of an early PvP specialist or on maps geared towards physical attacks. This hero requires a careful deck to really shine, but can perform well against decks that rely on physical damage, bullseye, etc. Thanks to ℒ✰mamboloi for pointing out he synergizes with Mythril Drone, and the talent Firestorm. His power also prevents Unbound creatures from attacking.
Patriarch : Guild Map, PvP, World Map
***3 star***
Dragon Rider : PvP
An interesting and fun summoner hero, he is surpassed in terms of hero-damage absorption by Predator and Berserker, yet his Dragon can hurt at higher levels thanks to its flame breath and physical attack doubling. The enemy has to be doing face damage for flame breath to work, but not too much to one-shot the Dragon. He does have good hero talents.
Paw Master : Grimoire Sorcery 5, PvP, World Map
His hero power is great at suppressing pesky resurrection decks, and a good at boosting your own creatures and doing direct damage to single enemies. Thanks to ℒ✰Gesi for pointing out it can be used similar to Spirit Arbiter with many rage boosts melded on weaker cards.
Predator : Guild Map, PvP
A strong all around hero for Faen, but weaker if you wanted to include other creatures, due to his Grizzly only healing Faen every turn. Despite this, a strong Faen-centric deck with Predator can carry you a long way in the game and is very multi-purposed. The grizzly mechanic also reduces enemy hero rage when your hero takes damage AND REDUCES that damage, making him a natural Guild Map and Grimoire Protean 4 candidate. I also found lots of success in PvP with him against decks running any sort of voodoo. I advise new players to stick with their predators for a long time.
Berserker : Guild Map, PvP
Another great Guild Map candidate, his boars have the potential of granting large, cumulative buffs to your creatures as well as tanking face damage. He is a great hero against anything with magic damage due to his infamous Spiky-Bits ability. I recommend holding onto this hero and leveling Spiky-Bits for just such occasions. At level 10, he deserves a higher star rating... "The boars don't suffer from status effects and can't be retreated. Very helpful against RQT." - ℒ✰Myriad Illu
Thor : PvP
Wins the prize for the most underwhelming 5 star hero. Carries a large hammer to make up for it.
***3.5 star***
Royal Guard : Grimoire Protean 5, Guild Map
Royal Guard is similar to Judgement for his ability to protect creatures from physical and magic damage when his power activates for TWO TURNS. Multiple unbound Oracles and a level 8 hero Vitality rune will let you obtain Protean 5 runes from the Grimoire. Other non-Grimoire strategies can use him to rely on creatures building attack damage and health over time.
Balrog : PvP, World Map
The lowest star hero for card removal, Balrog also brings undying to the table. He is useful in many situations before you'll have the card Paragon, or the cards and other heroes to remove creatures from play.
***4 star***
Wight : PvP, World Map
Outshines the other 4-star heroes in PvP and maps for two reasons: (1) undying talent, and (2) his ability to do massive damage you might not have otherwise have in your deck. His ability does not work on Guild Maps.
Hydra : PvP, World Map
Useful for building burst-stab damage decks for clearing trials, and maps. His ability can hurt at higher levels, and also provides decent lock-down.
***5 star***
Overlord : PvP, World Map
Essentially Balrog on steroids. Good for removing IF you can kill creatures and IF you can keep them dead WHEN your hero rage is full and your creatures receive the buff IF you have them on the field. See his problem? Too many conditions to be reliable in practice, which makes him the worst tournament mall pick.
Captivator : Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
WEAKNESS: Lucidity. A pretty sweet and potentially scary hero, Captivator's Crazed Frenzy ability essentially gives the player a free turn, can wipe the enemies board. Unfortunately, she fell out of favor when the Lucidity hero power became popular. That said, if your opponent does not have Lucidity, she ranks a lot higher. "Best boobs in the game." - ℒ✰Deer
***5.5 star***
Odin: Guild Map, PvP, World Map
From Yuna, "Odin is better than Captivator in all match-ups because they do the exact same thing, except Odin does better (it's a HP reduction skill, so it'll ignore things like Granite Dragon's Crystal Ward and other damage reduction skills)." If you face a Druidess with Odin, you are probably losing anyways, but make note that Odin can reduce HP through Storm Ward. At higher levels, the damage is more significant.
***6 star***
Blademaster : PvP, World Map
A high level Blademaster is no joke, but that straight up damage is all he's got. He will suffer against heavier recycle/rebirth decks, and against tanky creatures.
Taskmistress : Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
WEAKNESS: Lucidity. Farmed from being able to purchase the highest level Alice Bond. She is a very unique hero that lends itself going for face damage. Combine her with disposal and heavy hitters (suggesting a critical damage build with a handful of sacrifice creatures, Retreat Queen Temptresses, and Injured melds), and the enemy could be watching their hero health go to zero very fast. She'd be ranked much higher if not for Lucidity.
Oceanus : Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
WEAKNESS: Lucidity. A very strong hero, though after a huge nerf to his clones he has seen less play. At high levels he is still a monster, but he suffers from the Lucidity hero power, much like Captivator. It takes leveling Oceanus to 5 to get clones over 100%. Compared to Armageddon, he does not need a strong deck to carry him. Also, the only "IF" condition Oceanus must meet to use his power is the presence of an enemy creature, while Armageddon is only good IF there is a dead creature WHEN he has full rage.
Judgement : Grimoire Protean 5, Guild Map, PvP, World Map
A defensive mastermind, but you'll need strong creatures as he cannot help wipe your opponent's cards. Common use of this hero includes the Survival Grimoire for Protean runes (add the creature Sacred Wolf if you are going for level 5), Guild Map, and hero HP burn strategies that aim to win over 50+ turns. ℒ✰Myriad Illu pointed out it's possible to build strong PvP decks with him through heavy immunity creatures, with the goal of chaining his hero power every turn to prevent his creatures from dying at all.
***6.5***
Warlock : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, Guild Map, PvP, World Map
Warlock is harder one to put a finger on his true strength, in my opinion. The only hero able to cleanse all creatures and grant them immunity for a turn, it's no wonder he is seen at higher tournament levels. He's an impressive defensive hero and the perfect hard-counter to Wight and control decks. "Great on manual for at least the positioning of the first 4-5 crits. Perfect for Gauntlet..." -ℒ✰Myriad Illu. "He is good basically everywhere. But sometimes his skill activates in the wrong time and do nothing," -ℒ✰Deer. "Warlock is a underestimated hero," -japoon.
Alchemist : PvP, World Map
An offensive mastermind. She is Judgement's counterpart. Her offensive potential is great enough to wipe the field in one go if conditions are met. In order to take full advantage of her power, a careful deck must be crafted around her. These days immunity sees heavy usage, which makes her even better. She is one of the few that can obtain the talent Lucidity. Great on offense when you are controlling placement and hero rage, but weak on defense.
Armageddon : Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
The equipment ability "Blade Shard" is well-known as a critical IGG balancing mistake, as it renders a lot of strategy, card placement, and creatures pointless. The only positive is that this gave Armageddon a super-steroid. Armageddon is good starting right at level 1, but his primary drawback is needing strong cards to make the most of him. The creature PARAGON or GEOMANCER is a must for locking out the enemy graveyard, and instakill+disposal cards are strongly recommended. Once Armageddon's ability successfully activates just once on a key card, victory is a lot closer. "Sometimes it's difficult to activate his skill. You need a good deck with him." - ℒ✰Deer. Thanks to 1501✪NFS for pointing out Armageddon is NOT affected by Lucidity, unlike Oceanus. The longer the battle is drawn out, the stronger Armageddon becomes as the opponent loses more and more cards.
***7 star***
Vile Songstress : Gauntlet, Grimoire Vitality 5, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
WEAKNESS: Lucidity. The current meta at the mid-higher levels is to have a level 4 Vile Songstress. With good reason. When she is leveled up to 4, she incapacitates three enemy creatures, which also attack their own hero and take damage. She can take the talent Lucidity. She also has very high base health for a hero. Her popularity is a result of the strength of her kit with the relative ease of farming her from the ore mall. She can carry through most of the maps and trials, and also one of the Grimoire 5's. At level 10, she locks down 4 creatures.
Special note #1 - VS or SA? Comparing her strength to Spirit Arbiter is interesting, and there are opinions on both sides over which is strongest. Spirit Arbiter can more reliably deal damage and eliminate cards from play than can Vile Songstress incapacitate. The reason for this is cards affected by SA can be eliminated entirely if the ability activates, whereas, for VS the creatures remain on the field, often for some time. During this window the song can be dispelled, the creatures can be returned to hand by Retreat Queen Temptresses, and some abilities will activate anyways despite being under her song. Another interesting dynamic difference in this match-up is that creatures under song will continually generate hero rage for your opponent while taking damage from both song and your creatures. SA, on the other hand, fills up the enemy rage bar all at once, but if you have rage control in place, you only need to worry about it once per activation. Thus, enemy rage control might be easier to predict and manage with SA. However, a huge drawback for Spirit Arbiter was pointed out by Yuna, "Alice will completely drain Spirit Arbiter of Rage when played due to Spirit Arbiter being a Mortii hero."
Special note #2 - VS or SA? In the Druidess specific matchup, Vile Songstress is better than Spirit Arbiter. From Yuna, "Her Hero Skill (SA) gets counter-acted by Druidess' Storm Ward whereas Vile Songstress' Requiem is unblockable. Storm Ward can only minimize the damage it inflicts, but the enemy creatures will still remain locked down unless healed (and there are an extremely small number of ways this can happen)."
SUMMARY: The key factors in ranking VS v SA are the card Alice, if your opponent is Druidess, and if your opponent has the hero talent Lucidity. Lucidity was changed in early 2018 to now completely negate the VS hero skill Requiem.
***7.5 star***
Light's Hand : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
Her ability is POTENTIALLY amazing, but the damage it does is a not high. Without really strong creatures to follow up on her ability, she cannot carry by herself... but that's not her design. Good synergy from your creatures is needed for her to shine. "Light's Hand needs to be very high level to be good. But at level 8 and beyond she's pretty good." - Yuna
Spirit Arbiter : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
A strong candidate for the most powerful ore-mall hero at high levels, Spirit Arbiter is a kick-a** hero that does both high damage and potential removal to a few creatures at one time. An overlooked benefit of SA is her fail-safe mechanism of rage regeneration when her power does not kill. But remember that the card Alice is a large drawback.
***8 star***
Wraith Hunter : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
One of the highest powered free-to-play obtainable heroes. His removal potential is magnificent at high levels, but he doesn't have the fail-safe mechanism of Spirit Arbiter. His ability is also blocked by the Druidess ward (insert salty tears). His power shut down in large part by the imbalanced creature Aquarius, as targetting Aquarius with his hero power will activate her freeze effect and prevent bonus damage from WH creatures, which often results in no removal.
Warbringer : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
THE DAMAGE. And a very useful seal effect with that damage that makes him a versatile hero.
***9 star***
Druidess : Gauntlet, Guild Battle, PvP, World Map
The only hero that dominated the top of the tourney ladder until the dawn of Ronin. Her hero power prevents damage (besides unique HP reduction skills) to several of her creatures, up to 5 activations, which also does damage to all enemy creatures for each activation. She received a slight nerf when her hero skill no longer stacked. Overall she's a monster and overbearing, but Druidess should be seen as an end-game hero.
***10 star***
Twilight Ronin : Everything.
Activation of her hero power does not require 100 rage, and drains it from your opponent as well as shredding enemy creatures. The strength of this cannot be overstated given how popular it is to include multiple rage-control creatures. The new OP. Comes with sweet artwork to boot.
